THE POWER OF POWDERED RESINS

Powdered resins are widely used in nuclear and conventional power plants for condensate polishing. Resins are placed on the surface of a filter, with or without additional (fibrous) filter aids, and the condensate flows through the bed of powdered resin. This approach enables not only the removal of dissolved ions but also any suspended solids.

Powdered or pulverized resins are based on strong acid cation (SAC) polymers, usually in H+ or NH4+ ionic form, and strong base anion (SBA) resins that are in the OH- ionic form. These products are ion exchange resins which have been mechanically ground to an average particle size of approximately 100 µm. As a result of the significant increase in the surface area of these particles the active sites are readily available for ion exchange and the reaction rate is much more rapid compared to that of conventional bead resins.

Powdered resins are widely used in nuclear and conventional power plants for condensate polishing. Resins are placed on the surface of a filter, with or without additional (fibrous) filter aids, and the condensate flows through the bed of powdered resin. This approach enables not only the removal of dissolved ions but also any suspended solids.

The removal of ions and even colloidal substances is enhanced via floc formation; the floc refers to attraction forces between tiny cation and anion particles, generating a bulky and porous network which occupies 3-8 times the volume of the original ground resin. The floc formation depends on the ratio of the cation and anion ground resin used.

Powdered resins find applications also in cases where trace amounts of impurities need to be removed from a very large volume of liquid. This impurity can be dissolved heavy metals which need to be taken out prior to waste water disposal or a colouring component causing unusual colour or off shade in a liquid product, for example.

Finex manufactures the powdered resin mixtures in various different mixing ratios, depending on the dissolved ion content of the condensate to be treated. Cation/anion mixtures of 40/60, 50/50 and 70/30 are examples but, in practice, any combination can be supplied. Both pure cation and pure anion powdered resins are available upon request.

Finex powdered resins are always made to order. The raw material is regenerated just before the grinding process and the final product packed in 5 kg bags (dry weight) for easy dosing and handling.
